Law Enforcement Officer Leading a Double Life

CONCORD, NC - Aug. 03, 2000 – When Brian E. Voncannon takes off his badge and gun at the end of each shift, he sits down at the keyboard to become engulfed in his other life as an author. Since 1998, he has been writing books about his family history, but recently took it one step further. His newest book, Living Behind the Shield: A Modern Warrior’s Path to Bravehood, has been released by Writer’s Club Press/iUniverse.com. It is currently available for order through iUniverse.com; however, the title will be set up at Ingram books within a few weeks as well as many online book stores.

The book explains what it takes to become an officer, as well as the challenges that one will meet while in this career field. The author includes many of his own personal experiences as an officer that the reader may find hilarious or horrifying. Several chapters deal with officer stress and the problems faced when the shift ends. The final chapter is a Christian message of hope for those already involved in the world of law enforcement. The author’s goal is to unveil the lives of the men and women behind the shield from a true-to-life perspective.

The author was born and raised in North Carolina and has been involved in law enforcement since 1989. He is currently employed as a full time Deputy Sheriff/SWAT team member, while spending his spare time as a writer. Having a great pride in his ancestry, he has written other books which surround his mixed Cherokee/Saponi Native American ancestry. One of his Cherokee poems, The Tears Still Remain, is to be published in an anthology this year by the International Library of Poetry. He and his mother are enrolled members of the Echota Cherokee Tribe of Alabama.

"I will tell you up front that your day in and day out life as a police
officer involves dealing with those things you can see and do not
see…But the greatest battles you will face will be spiritual."
Taken from the foreword by Bernie Loos, Metro-Dade Police Officer
Miami, Florida from 1974 to 1987.

We see them everyday. They come when we call, and they are there when we need them. Often their jobs take them where others would not go, but still they willingly go. Seldom do we know what drives the men and women behind the shield. How does one accomplish becoming an officer? What is it really like being an officer? What effect does this fascinating, but dangerous career have on those that are called for this purpose?

Living Behind the Shield: A Modern Warrior’s Path to Bravehood is a book that will help answer these and other questions. Written by a veteran in this field, this book will take you deep inside the very soul of the law enforcement officer. Common challenges that officers face each day are discussed, along with what happens to the officer when the badge comes off at the end of the shift. Those seeking a career in law enforcement will find the text educational, while veteran officers will see that they are not alone in their battles.

The author includes a section, which is basically an officer’s diary, of calls that he has personally been involved with. Although some may be shocking, unusual, or hilarious, they are all true stories. With a view from the "driver’s seat", the reader will have a first-hand look at the situations that many officers face each day. The final chapter gives a message of hope to officers from a Christian standpoint. Whether involved with law enforcement or not, you will not want to miss this book!
